Golden Bell Awards Winner of Best Sound, Chen-Tao Chiang
uses TVS-1282T3 to achieve the breathtaking tension of sound effects

  • Company background

Hidden in an alley of Taipei, Taiwan, Kiwi Inc. has the same capability as shown in its film post productions, low key but not to be ignored with its dramatic "audio volume." Kiwi Inc. is a well-known film post production company in Taiwan. The company head Chen-Tao Chiang (Tao) was a drummer in a band in his college years, which raised his interest in sound recording and music production. Then he entered the LAPCC in 1998 and assumed the role of sound recording for commercials and served as a sound mixer. He founded Kiwi Inc. in December 2007 and served as Executive Producer and continued to dedicate himself to post production engineering of films and sound effects. Up to now he has accumulated a wealth of experience. The company won the Best Sound Award in the 50th and 51st Golden Bell Awards.

  • Facing challenges

As a post-production company, Kiwi Inc. covers dubbing, special effects, captioning and other important tasks. The massive amount of materials for sound effects requires significant storage space. Coupled with the fact that the team often needs to use common materials or the same files during their creation process to engage in different stages of production like dubbing, mixing, and special effects, the importance of the collaborative environment is a priority. Furthermore using external hard drives to transfer files is not only limited by the transfer speed of the USB interface, but is also confined by the repeated revisions. A single project might have more than 20 different revisions, so this is a laborious and time-consuming solution. The fear of losing files is a realistic worry for most workers in creative industries. Therefore finding a fast and reliable file storage and backup device is of critical importance.

Solution

The major tool used in Kiwi Inc's operation is iMac®. After comparing different NAS solutions, Chen-Tao Chiang chose the QNAP TVS-1282T3 Thunderbolt™ 3 NAS. The TVS-1282T3 is equipped with an high-performance Intel® 7th generation processor, a Core™ i5 quad-core processor with 16GB DDR4 RAM (or a Core™ i7 quad-core processor with 32GB/64GB DDR4 RAM). It is a 3-in-1 storage solution combining Thunderbolt™ 3, NAS, and iSCSI SAN. 8x 4TB Toshiba MN05ACA hard drives and 4x 120GB SSDs were installed to ensure the highest storage stability and performance.

  • High-performance collaborative environment

Tao mounts the shared folder on the TVS-1282T3 on his iMac® to avoid the need of having to copy 4K files to the local machine. He also shares files with other coworkers via iSCSI for each person to conduct different stages of the post production work on their own and to elevate the team's efficiency.

  • Thunderbolt™ 3 high-speed file transfer

The TVS-1282T3 Thunderbolt™ 3 NAS features bandwidth of up to 40 Gbps. It even has two built-in 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports for uncompromising high-speed performance.

  • Share files with a single button

After post production, the size of a file can be as small as 10 MB and as big as 200GB. Tao can use File Station or the Qfile mobile app to share files without having to worry about size limits.

  • Comprehensive RAID support

The massive amount of audio and old works are definitely important assets that creators cannot afford to lose. Tao created a RAID 6 configuration on the TVS-1282T3 to protect his accumulated materials from the risk of data loss.

  • Auto-tiering of storage space, the best storage configuration for uninterrupted services

When post production of films is in progress, it needs to use the materials accumulated over the years and the massive amount of files not only takes up storage place, but also might not be used often. Qtier™ auto-tiering technology prioritizes files and data based on access rates, including moving frequently-accessed files to quicker storage devices (SSD) and infrequently-accessed files to slower storage devices (high-capacity HDD).

  • Toshiba hard drives

The Toshiba "MN Series" HDDs are 3.5-inch SATA drives. This series is designed for 24/7 reliability. The rated annual workload is 180TB. The MN series uses rotational vibration compensation technology to automatically detect and compensate for vibrations. The drives were designed for NAS use and provides Tao with highly-reliable storage.

Results

The QNAP TVS-1282T3 Thunderbolt™ NAS brought high-speed transfer speeds and large storage capacity to store all of Kiwi Inc.'s materials. Through iSCSI SAN, Tao can access files in shared folders on the TVS-1282T3 directly on his local machine and use common materials and collaborate with coworkers. With the high-speed transfer of Thunderbolt™ 3, files can be moved quickly no matter their size. This makes work more efficient and sharing of large files can also be done quickly using File Station. The Toshiba MN Series hard drives used by Kiwi Inc. provide their TVS-1282T3 with dependable and high-performance storage to keep their materials safe and always accessible.
